Brahmas Shutout In Preseason Opener

The Lone Star Brahmas will enter the 2017/18 season with a chance to do something that has not been done in the NAHL since 2009 by winning back to back Robertson Cup Championships. One team they will be looking to knock them off their perch is the Shreveport Mudbugs playing in their second NAHL season. Last year, in their initial campaign the Mudbugs made the playoffs, but lost in the first round to Corpus Christi.

Shreveport was at NYTEX Sports Centre on Saturday night as both teams opened their preseason schedule. The first period saw both teams play fairly tentative hockey, feeling each other out and trying to get comfortable on the ice. There were a total of nine shots on goal with Lone Star holding a 6-3 advantage. Each team was whistled for six minutes of penalties in the frame.

The middle frame belonged to the Mudbugs who got on the board first with a redirect by Emils Ezitis in front of Benjamin Beck, off a point shot by Jack Clement. Without some strong play by Beck in net the Brahma’s deficit could have been two or three going into the second intermission.

Period number three was much in the vein of the first with neither team able to find the back of the net despite the Brahmas having some good scoring chances. The Mudbug’s Tim Guggisberg picked up the shutout in net.

Neither team was able to score on the power play with Lone Star going 0-3 and Shreveport 0-5 and Shreveport held a 25-19 advantage in shots on goal.

The Brahmas will welcome the Topeka RoadRunners on Tuesday September 2 as they continue their preseason schedule.
