The Lone Star Brahmas opened their 2018/19 season on the road against the Amarillo Bulls. The Battle of the Cattle series went Lone Star’s way early with the Bulls unable to stay out of the sin bin.

Just 3:47 into the contest the Brahmas went on their first power play of the season thanks to a Nick Trela slashing minor. It took defenseman Ben Pirko just under one minute to light the lamp from the point with assists going to Clayton Lackey and Jack Sampson. Lone Star would go back on the man advantage at 11:23 leading to Michal Stinil redirecting a Vilho Saariluoma blast past Jason Grande at 12:03 to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

Lone Star ran into some penalty trouble of their own with a too many men bench minor just before the close of period one and an interference minor on Jakub Sirota 55 seconds into the second. Skating five on three, Amarillo was able to sneak one past Harrison Feeney off the tape of Jason Brancheau with Jake Willets and Brett Abdelnour picking up the assists.

Special teams continued to play a big part in the contest as Matt Guerra scored Lone Star’s third power play goal of the night from the slot at 6:35 of the second. Saariluoma and Stinil recorded their second points of the night with assists on the play. At 10:34 Guerra scored the first even strength goal of the game with a diving poke at a loose puck. Sam Brennan logged the primary assist while Stinil picked up point number three with the secondary. The goal chased Grande from the net in favor of Ryan Winter.

Abdelnour notched Amarillo’s second power play goal at 15:36 from Brancheau to cut the Lone Star lead in half.

The final 20 minutes of play ran off the clock in contracst to the first 40 minutes. The march to the penalty box continued for both squads, but there was no further scoring handing Feeney and the Brahmas their first win of the season heading into next week’s NAHL Showcase Tournament in Blaine, MN.

Amarillo held the edge in shots on goal 29 – 23, but Lone Star was 3 – 7 on the power play while the Bulls went 2 – 5.
