The Lone Star Brahmas made the trip down I-20 to face off against the Shreveport Mudbugs Thursday opening a three game series with second place in the NAHL South Division on the line.

Lone Star used the first power play of the night to jump out to a lead in the opening frame at 13:54. The puck was locked up in the far corner with Andrew DeCarlo pulling it out of a group of five players and sending it up to Tim Henriksson at the far point. Henriksson ripped one on net with Frank Trazzera and Eric Huss in front of Leo Chuard setting a screen. The Mudbugs netminder never saw the puck until it was in the back of the net. Jake Suede made it a two goal lead jumping on the rebound of a Matt Guerra shot from distance. Suede made a beautiful stick handling move to go around Chuard and tuck it between the netminder and the near post at 17:35. Gabe Potyk picked up the secondary assist on the play.

At 6:25 of the second Suede carried the puck into the Shreveport zone before dropping it for Guerra. The Sanford, FL native stick handled putting the puck between the legs of Jack Jaunich then drove to the far post before sending it through the crease to Blake Evennou on the backdoor for a onetimer into the twine.

Shreveport went on the power play moments later and Warren Natyshak found the puck between the hashmarks. Seth Eisele flashed out the right pad to stone Natyshak cold. Jay Feiwell tried to wrap the rebound around Eisele, but pushed it all the way through the paint and out the other side. Some of the Mudbugs players began celebrating and the light went off, but the Referee was in perfect position to see that the puck never crossed the line.

Eisele made another big right pad save early in the third on a drive to the net by Jaunich. Only seconds later Conor Witherspoon fired a shot on net from the bottom of the near circle that Eisele knocked down with Mathew Smoliga laying in Eisele’s crease the rebound went right back to Witherspoon for a put back that Eisele was not able to corral. Time of the goal was 1:29 with Anton Rubtsov picking up the assist.

CJ Regula was whistled for a head contact major and game misconduct at the 14:46 mark after he leveled Noah Roofe behind the play at center ice. Riding a two goal lead the Brahmas used the five minute man advantage to burn off the clock.

Shreveport did hold an advantage in shots on goal at 37-22, but Lone Star won the special teams play going 1-3 on the power play while holding the Mudbugs scoreless on three opportunities. With the win the Brahmas move into a second place tie with Shreveport and put some distance between themselves and fourth place Corpus Christi.
