Matthew Rickard – Player Of The Week

Lone Star Brahmas defenseman Matthew Rickard is Bauer NAHL South Division Player of the Week. Matthew Rickard was selected as the Bauer Hockey NAHL South Division Player of the Week after putting up 2G-3A in the Lone Star Brahmas' NAHL Showcase sweep.


The Lone Star Brahmas defenseman Matthew Rickard was named the Bauer NAHL South Division Star of the Week on Monday.

With the Brahmas returning only two blueliners from last season Head Coach Dan Wildfong had to dig deep to replenish the defensive corps. In Rickard he found a player that can not only shut down opposing forwards, but put points up with a good percentage of them as well.

This past week the Brahmas played four games at the NAHL Showcase in Blaine, MN posting a perfect record while outscoring their opponents 16-7. Rickard did his fair share of the scoring putting up 2G-3A recording at least one point in each of the four games and currently shares the team lead in scoring.

Rickard’s first goal of the season came in the second period of the Lone Star Brahmas opening contest against the Aberdeen. He added the lone assist on the game winner against Kenai River in game two and another assist against Bismarck the following night. Matt accounted for the game winner against Wilkes Barre/Scranton early in the second then added a primary assist on an insurance goal as the Brahmas wrapped up their Showcase.

The 6’1/180 lbs native of Coventry, Rhode Island spent last season with the Powell River Kings of the BCHL recording 21 points on 2G-19A in 58 games played.

“I think Matt is a defenseman that a lot of NCAA Division 1 schools are taking an interest in because of his skating and offensive ability, which he showed off at the Showcase,” Head Coach Wildfong said to NAHL.com. “We are very excited to watch his progression and development throughout the year.”

Another Lone Star Brahma player received recognition from the league as well with veteran forward Michal Stinil being named South Division Star of the Week – Honorable Mention.

Stinil who hails from Decin, Czech Republic is 6’0/185lbs. He productive rookie season with Lone Star putting up 14G-9A despite being limited to 29 games played due to injuries.

At the Showcase Stinil recorded 3G-2A in the four games with 1G-1A against both Aberdeen and Wilkes Barre/Scranton to go along with a single goal against Bismarck.
