For the second time in recent weeks two Brahmas players were honored by the NAHL with Nicholas Niemo and Zach Purcell receiving recognition.

Nicholas Niemo

Two weeks ago Nicholas Niemo was name NAHL South Division Second Star of the Week. This time he stepped it up a notch and earned South Division Player of the Week. The 5’ 10” – 165 pound native of Middlebury, VT accounted for five points with 2G-3A and the Brahmas swept Amarillo.

On Friday night Lone Star fell behind 2-0 early. Needing to find a way to squelch the Bulls’ momentum, Niemo fed a beautiful backhand pass to Andrew DeCarlo catching the defense on their heels. The goal ebbed the tide and got things going the home team’s way. Late in the third with the Brahmas clinging to a one goal lead and the Bulls skating with the extra attacker, Niemo potted an empty netter to put any comeback attempt to rest.

Saturday Niemo was involved from the get go picking up the primary assist on a goal by Purcell just 18 seconds into the contest. Right at two minutes later Niemo netted one of his own to push the lead to two. Amarillo would come back with two goals before the close of the period to make it 2-2 entering the second period. Nicholas would pick up another primary assist nearing the mid-point of the second frame as Lone Star put up three goals to take a commanding lead.

Just six games into the campaign, Niemo has accounted for 10 points on 5G-5A to set 7th in the NAHL in scoring just three points behind the leader. This despite every player ahead of Niemo playing a minimum of eight games so far.

Zach Purcell

Zach Purcell a 5′ 9″ – 165 pound forward from Aurora, CO had every bit as productive a series as did Niemo to earn NAHL South Division Honorable Mention.

In game one Purcell had the primary assist on the game winner by Joey Baez then another on Niemo’s empty netter to put the game away.

Saturday, Purcell had found the back of the net before many of the Brahmas’ faithful had fully settled into their seats. In what has to be one of the fastest if not the fastest goal in Brahmas’ history Purcell and his teammates were celebrating just 18 seconds into the game. He then had the primary assist on Neimo’s goal at 2:13. The second period was much like the first with only the timing changed. Purcell had the first goal of the frame followed just over two minutes later with a primary assist on the eventual game winner by DeCarlo.

Purcell is also ranked among the league leaders in scoring tied for 16th with eight points. Purcell has put up 3G-5A in his six games played.

The Brahmas will take to the ice again this weekend as they make the trip to Wichita Falls to face the expansion Warriors for the first time. Puck drop on both Friday and Saturday nights will be 7:05pm.
